Former IIUM president would have approved GST forum

Sanusi Junid says he would have even attended the debate himself and sent a better representative from Umno to take on Rafizi Ramli

KUALA LUMPUR: Former International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) president Sanusi Junid said he would have approved a controversial GST forum at the university in May this year and even attended the debate himself if he were still in charge then.

Sanusi, a keen debater himself during his student days, said he would have given his consent upon receipt of an appeal by the organisers, if the Student Affairs Department had rejected the application.

But Sanusi said he would take the necessary disciplinary action not amounting to dismissal against those who organised forums at the campus without the consent of the authorities.
He told Berita Daily this when asked on the one-year suspension meted out to two members of the IIUM Student Representative Council (SRC) for organising the controversial GST forum, which featured Umno's Lokman Adam and PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli.

Following a last-minute change of venue, the forum started with Lokman speaking for about 15 minutes but Pandan MP Rafizi was stopped by campus security about eight minutes into his speech, ostensibly because the organisers did not have permission to hold the event. A representative from the Customs Department was supposed to have attended the forum on May 13 but did not show up.

Sanusi added that he would have sent a better representative than 'bad loser' Lokman, knowing that the opposition would be represented by someone of Rafizi's stature.

“Being an Umno member who likes debating, I would have been present at the forum and I would not have allowed a low-calibre representative from Umno if I know that the opposition's representative is a smart guy,” he said.

“Lokman himself should have checked who was going to be his opponent before he accepted the responsibility of defending the unpopular GST. Had Lokman been more meticulous he would have known why he should not represent Umno.

“I am informed that Lokman is famous as a bad loser especially when he had the ambition of being upgraded to a higher post in his present JASA department in the Ministry of Information." he said.

Sanusi suspected that the students were suspended because Lokman lost in the debate.

"If illegality was the question then Lokman should not have participated. Had Lokman trounced Rafizi in the debate, similar forums would have been organised somewhere else,” he said.

Earlier this month, SRC president Hanif Mahpa and its academic exco Afiqah Zulkifli were found guilty of organising the forum.

Hanif, however, said he would continue fighting for student activism and academic freedom in local universities despite being suspended for two semesters and issued with a stern warning.

Accepting punishment part of life

When asked if the suspended duo were doing the right thing in pursuing academic freedom, Sanusi said that freedom can be interpreted differently between students and the establishment.

“When students talk of freedom it carries different meanings and interpretations even among themselves and what the establishment interprets the meaning to be. Whatever the meaning, the first responsibility of a student is to his studies.

“However, being able to understand what is happening in one's country and the world, especially for IIUM students, should also be a student's responsibility.

“I have always enjoyed debating and oratory from younger days. As a result I took up reading as a hobby as I did not like losing merely out of lack of reading,” he said.

The duo are given an option to appeal directly to IIUM president Rais Yatim, once the written ground of judgement is made available.

An appeal might result in the suspension period being maintained, reduced or even increased.

Sanusi advised the two not to be unduly worried about the possible consequences of their action in organising the forum.

“I was one of 115 classmates at the Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) who were caned for organising the 'Dragon Dance' at dawn in 1961 against the headmaster's advice. We were proud about it, and we now have a WhatsApp group in memory. Accepting punishment should be part of life,” he said.

Sanusi: Malays not 'bangsat', their Umno leader is one

Aug 26th, 2015 10:00 am     Aug 26th, 2015 12:41 pm

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak had shocked the public when he resorted to the word 'bangsat (bastard) to describe the state of Malays if Umno loses.

However, former minister and Umno veteran Sanusi Junid in an interview uploaded on Youtube suggested that the word should apply to the Umno leader who led Malays to the current state.

"Now there is the threat that Malays may become 'bangsat' if Umno loses so the person responsible for this is the reason why Malays will become 'bangsat'.

"I feel it is not the Malays that are 'bangsat'. It is the Umno leader that causes Umno to lose is the 'bangsat'," he said in the video uploaded by blogger Din Turtle.

Sanusi: Racial play dulls the patriotic spirit

Syauqi Jamil

Umno veteran and former Kedah MB says the dull run-up to the Merdeka day celebration this year is due to various issues besieging the nation, ranging from GST to economic woes

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians aren't too enthusiastic about the upcoming Merdeka day celebrations because they have nothing to cherish but only the nation's debts and the Goods and Services Tax (GST) at a time when they are suffering, Umno veteran and former Kedah Menteri Besar Sanusi Junid said today.

Speaking to Berita Daily, he said the patriotic value among Malaysians was eroded by politicians playing the racial card to amass support.

Assalamu'alaikum Tan Sri Sanusi Junid.

Wa'alaikumussalam Warahmatullaahi Wabarakaatuh.

I am Syauqi Jamil, a journalist from online portal As per agreement via SMS earlier, kindly respond to the questions below:

Q1. From what has been happening lately with Umno, do you think Umno members today are giving their full support to Umno president Najib Razak? If not should they speak up?

A1. DS Najib himself knows, by now, that he does not have the full support, for his leadership, from UMNO members. UMNO members at all levels are already speaking against DS Najib, but only some are doing it loudly.

Q2. Is the sacking of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin seems to you as the Prime Minister's attempt at silencing his critics or as his approach to having a better united and solid team in his cabinet?

A2. I am not sure by sacking Tan Sri Muhyiddin from the post of Deputy Prime Minister, and other ministers from their portfolios, DS Najib is getting a better team. The new cabinet appears to be united in only one way, and that is they are defensive of whatever has happened to 1MDB, and they are also vocally loud in their attack against Tun Dr. Mahathir. That is why I called it as the 1MDB cabinet.

Q3. Should Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin continue to criticize the PM now?

A3. Tan Sri Muhyiddin did not start criticizing the PM and therefore it is wrong to ask whether he should continue. Tan Sri Muhyiddin has only been giving his opinion on whatever little he knew about 1MDB; and what he said, though non-provocative and more enquiring, appeared to be unpleasant to DS Najib.

As Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin knew too little about 1MDB as DS Najib, being a Prime Minister and Finance Minister, had kept everything to himself, without really getting the approval of the cabinet, or even letting them know about the massive financial dealings of 1MDB whose loans are fully guaranteed by the Malaysian Government.

The MALAYSIAN INSIDER - SCAPEGOAT to own up US$700 million donation

Umno veteran expects scapegoat to own up as US$700 million donor

Published: 6 August 2015 8:59 PM

A scapegoat will admit to having donated the US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) that was found to be in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal accounts, says former secretary-general of Umno, Tan Sri Sanusi Junid. – The Malaysian Insider filepicpic, August 6, 2015.

An Umno veteran leader expects a scapegoat to admit having donated the US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) that was found to be in Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak's personal accounts.

Former secretary-general Tan Sri Sanusi Junid said he was not surprised by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's announcement that the money came from a foreign donor and not from state strategic investor 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

"It is something expected and not a surprise. I am sure they will look for a rich individual to admit that he or she had donated the money," he told The Malaysian Insider via SMS.

He said it is hard to believe that an individual can fork out so much money for a donation.

"What is clear is that if the donor is a Malaysian, it is not just one person. A billionaire could not even afford to donate such a large amount," said the federal minister who served under former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's administration in the 1980s.

"They have to find people who are based overseas like the Sultan of Brunei, Bill Gates, Warren Buffet or those of their level. Or Arab royalty and their children."

Sanusi said businessmen would not donate such as amount without hoping for something in return.

"Then it will not be a donation," he added.

"Unless we hire someone and pay them very well until they are willing to admit they are the donors. But it has to be someone who is credible and can be trusted," he said.

Sanusi expressed confidence that the donation did not come from Umno members as usually, the annual fees are paid by the division chiefs.

The former Kedah Menteri Besar also cynically said that only those with a high Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) in university will be "used" to find the individual who is willing to be a scapegoat.

"Have to find a leader with CGPA 3.85 to look for the donor," he said.

Sanusi did not mention any names, but Umno minister Datuk Ahmad Maslan, who has courted scorn and ridicule on the Internet over his attempts to explain to the public how the unpopular goods and services tax (GST) worked, was dubbed Ahmad "CGPA 3.85", after he wrote on Twitter that he was not so stupid as he had earned a 3.85 CGPA in his Master of Business Administration.

On Monday, MACC said the US$700 million (RM2.6 billion) which was channelled into Najib's personal bank accounts came from donors and not from 1MDB.

The anti-graft agency also confirmed that the donor is from the Middle East, but did not name the source. MACC also said it would ask Najib to provide an explanation on the donation.

Allegations of RM2.67 billion in Najib's accounts first surfaced in a report by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on July 2, citing documents from Malaysian investigators.

WSJ said the source of the funds was unknown, but came through 1MDB-linked entities in various tranches, the largest of which – US$681 million – was channelled to Najib's accounts in March 2013, ahead of the general election in May that year.

The prime minister denied taking 1MDB funds for personal use, but did not directly address the fund transfers.

A few of Najib's Cabinet members had previously said that there was nothing wrong in money being funnelled into his personal accounts as he had the capacity to be a trustee for Umno, of which he is president. – August 6, 2015.

Perlukah 3 surat persetujuan?
2. Waktu saya menjadi salah seorang rakan kongsi dalam syarikat SAZARA Sdn. Bhd.
